The Department for Commerce & Employment holds the license
for Investors in People and the Guernsey Training Agency manages the
project on its behalf.
The Guernsey Training Agency is the first point
of contact for interested parties as well as providing information,
advice and access to various resources to support the Investors
process.
Getting started
STEP
1: TOP MANAGEMENT SUPPORT
It is critical that top management understand the Principles
of the Standard and the benefits of working towards it. In
order to achieve this, the Agency is happy to arrange a short
presentation to senior management teams.
STEP
2: DETERMINE RESPONSIBILITY
Once a decision has been taken to work towards the Standard,
it should also be determined who is responsible for Investors
in People internally. This should be someone at a senior level
because the Standard involves the strategic direction of the
organisation. The person with overall responsibility is the
'Internal Facilitator'. In larger organisations it may also
be appropriate to appoint a project team who will work with
the Internal Facilitator - this group should be made up of
people from all levels within the organisation.
STEP
3: WHAT EXTERNAL RESOURCES
ARE REQUIRED?
Some organisations feel they have sufficient internal resources
to work with the Standard at their own time and pace. Where
this is the case, the Guernsey Training Agency will provide support
and guidance where appropriate. Others find great value in
utilising the services of an external Adviser. The Training
Agency holds the details of a number of qualified Advisers
and should be contacted for further information.
Beginning the Journey
STEP
1: WHERE ARE WE AGAINST THE
STANDARD? EARLY ASSESSMENT VS ADVISER CHECK
In order to determine what action is required to improve performance,
the organisation must first benchmark itself against the Standard;
identifying existing good practice and areas for improvement.
A
staff questionnaire and/or interviews are useful tools to
gain this information.
STEP
2: ACTION PLAN
The Internal Facilitator, with the support of an adviser and
project team (as appropriate) should review the results from
Step 1 and produce an action plan to address any gaps.
STEP
3: COMMITMENT TO WORK TOWARDS
THE STANDARD
Once the action plan has been produced and agreed by the organisation's
senior management team, it should be sent to the Agency with
a letter of commitment (examples available). A certificate
is then issued by the Agency to show publicly the commitment
of the organisation to work towards the Standard.
